"Do you know when you'll be speaking to Haim?" an inquiry reads. "My request was to ask if I can be their newest bandmate."

There's just a key snag: The author likewise wants to be the Haims' fourth member. What's more, we are not alone. A host of famous supporters have publicly begged for the honor.

One thing is obvious something is going on. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana began their musical journey doing sets at neighborhood delis with their family. Now they're multiple Grammy contenders.

Similar to the greatest groups, they're a inseparable unit. Their visuals frequently show them marching in sync down the streets of Los Angeles. On stage, they perform with such pure happiness you find yourself thinking, "I'd love to be a piece of that, too."

"How often on tour that audience members approached us and said, 'Watching you live, I bought a guitar'," says Alana, the most junior of the trio. "That is the ultimate honor. That is recognition in itself. Our mission is accomplished if we can motivate young girls to form a group."

"And thus all are welcome to be the honorary part of the family."

Award Recognition

The band have called into home, where they're taking a pause after an major tour in promoting their fourth album, I Quit.

They're currently reeling from the news it's been shortlisted for Best Rock Album at the Grammys – with Haim the first all-woman band ever in consideration for the award.

"I follow the nominations every year, so it sort of feels like a surreal movie when your name is read out," notes Alana. "I had to call my sisters to say, 'Am I hearing this right or am I imagining things'?"

The importance of the accolade resonates with the sisters.

"We really set out to make a rock record this time, so it's a major milestone," continues Alana. "Yet we're just thankful for the pioneers that came before us."

Personal Turmoil and Humour

The record was born from a period of emotional upheaval. All three sisters ended up single, and the music explores that odd transitional period where you're relieved to be free, but not quite ready to move on.

The themes detail departures and farewells. The sisters desire love, but not the kind of love they've got. You can hear them working out in real time who they are becoming.

"I adore way of putting it, yes," says Danielle. "I Quit is like a personal statement. You have to consciously practice blocking the criticism and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'."

Evolution of Sound

That recent resilience called for a different sonic direction – more organic and immediate than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who co-produced the album, that was founded on the drums.

"Drums are such a nuanced thing, and I care so much about it," she emphasizes.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the name of our memoir," jokes Alana. "I've said it, our albums cannot begin until we find the perfect drum sound."

Experiences and Shared Camaraderie

The trio's honesty shaped the album's rollout, where the sisters revealed some of their personal misadventures.

Someone broke up with Este over a health concern. Alana told a story of flying to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a casual gesture at midnight.

"When you're going through these setbacks, you just feel like there's no hope," notes Alana. "Thus to be able to laugh at those stories and have them tell you wilder stories, it's incredible."

A Secure Future

You can clearly sense a change in the band. Today, Haim are more certain of their position in the music world.

They're top-billed acts, with chart-topping albums and an worldwide fan base.

But the band will consistently be their primary priority.

"My sisters and I have been performing since I was four," shares Alana. "It's like no alternative that we were meant to do. And I'm really fortunate we've gotten here and we're still kicking."
