An Emotional Moment as Liam Rosenior Overcomes Obstacles

"Liam Rosenior is a top tactician who knows the game back to front, and that's the most important thing.

"However, in my role as the Blues' pioneering black footballer, I would be lying if I said this news fails to move me."

These were the sentiments of the former Chelsea winger, who earned his historic debut for the Blues' first team off the bench back in the spring of 1982.

On Tuesday, the club hired Strasbourg boss Rosenior, aged 41, to be their new manager following the exit of Enzo Maresca.

The French club is part of a Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital-owned ownership group which also controls the London club.

There have been only 12 black managers – not including individuals in interim positions – in the Premier League since its inception 34 in the past.

"What really strikes me regarding Rosenior is that he was raised and developed his game not far from here, he knows the local fans," continued Canoville.

"Whenever children observe a figure like Rosenior managing the team they support, someone they can identify with, from a similar background, who comes from a family that champions what's right… that's powerful demonstrating that opportunities exist.

"Indeed, this represents an enormous moment for Chelsea, for the capital, for all aspiring individual dreaming big.

"But right now? Let's back Liam, provide him with the necessary tools, and let the man get on with the job."

What Do the Numbers Indicate?

Dutch legend Ruud Gullit was appointed Chelsea head coach back in the nineties thereby becoming the top flight's first African heritage head coach.

Twelve years later, by 2008, Paul Ince became the first black English manager in the Premier League after taking charge at Blackburn Rovers.

The Hammers' boss Nuno Espirito Santo currently stands as the only other present Premier League gaffer of colour.

The shortage of ethnic minority managers across the English game corresponds with a lack of diversity in the boardroom.

As per a BFP 2023's report, 43% of Premier League footballers are from African or Caribbean heritage.

However, research from Kick It Out revealed just 3.2% of board and senior leadership positions at most Premier League clubs are held by people from ethnically diverse communities.

Regarding first-team coaching positions, according to data provided by eleven clubs, the figure is two percent.

Across all coaching positions – encompassing senior roles – from the same 11 clubs, the figure is just five percent.

"He has undoubtedly made history in terms of him being announced as a Chelsea head coach, and as an organization, we hope to witness more such appointments," said the chief executive of Kick It Out Samuel Okafor.

"It is acknowledged that there exists loads of talent that exists within ethnic minority groups... they want a chance to show their capabilities. It is imperative to continue to striving to dismantle those obstacles once and for all."

Furthermore, the new appointee will become the fourth permanent English head coaches presently in the Premier League – joining Sean Dyche, Eddie Howe as well as Scott Parker – which trails the continent's other big five divisions in terms of national managers.

Sixteen of the 20 top-flight coaches in Serie A are Italian, Eleven of the 20 in Spain, Twelve of the 18 in Germany while Ten in Ligue 1 in France.

The present Chelsea interim boss Calum McFarlane commented: "I'm sure every aspiring British coaches from an academy background will be, to some degree no matter who you support, supporting Liam.

"It is really inspirational for young English academy coaches to witness an individual get such a role with that profile and we hope he does highly successful."

'Let's not forget – he's there due to ability'

His father, Leroy, Rosenior Sr., had a career with the likes of Fulham, West Ham as well as Queens Park Rangers, with his coaching stint peaked with a five-month stint at then-League One side Brentford FC in 2006.

Two years ago, he was awarded an MBE in the Honours List for his services to tackling inequality within the sport and wider society.

After Liam hung up his boots he pursued his father's footsteps. He began writing a column for The Guardian, and in one piece he acknowledged the lack of diversity among managers. He pointed out that race does not influence ability arguing that opportunities should be given based on qualification.

He also made a point he would repeat: that significant lack of diversity results in a failure to understand of players from different cultural and ethnic backgrounds.

During an interview with The Athletic FC, he explained how his star striker, Emmanuel Emegha, had been described as "hard to manage" and "passionate", but said he could relate to the Netherlands player of Nigerian descent. The striker is expected to join him in moving from Strasbourg to West London this summer.

In further Guardian columns, Rosenior also admitted he was "embarrassed" to hear an unnamed staff member utter a discriminatory remark. He vowed support for the Premier League's inclusion campaign and authored a public message to Donald Trump while he was in office, condemning his "overt" prejudice.

Rosenior has since built his reputation in the dugout – initially with Hull City, then Strasbourg – and Wayne Rooney said this week he was "among the best coaches I've ever worked with" after their collaboration at Derby County.

The manager bid his farewells to his former club earlier this week prior to putting pen to paper on a long-term deal at Chelsea.

Chelsea boasted the Premier League's first African heritage boss in Gullit and the first black captain named Paul Elliott.
