Crew Member Reveals Emotional Distress Following ‘Tsunami of Backlash After Historic Trip

A Vietnamese-American astronaut has publicly detailed her battle with depression after being subjected to a “tsunami of harassment” in the wake of a landmark journey to the edge of space.

The 34-year-old activist – recognized as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the 11-minute suborbital flight earlier this year, which also featured well-known figures.

The much-publicized journey was met with derision by some, who questioned its cost and carbon footprint.

Reflecting on the situation, the astronaut, who made history as the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the vicious response buried her dreams under an torrent of sexist abuse.

“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” Ms. Nguyen stated in a online statement, referring to a check-in call from a mission companion in the aftermath of the journey.

She described the news reports and online discourse as an unprecedented psychological assault.

“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she wrote. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”

Buried Under Misogyny

The researcher, who has conducted studies in gynecological science and conducted tests during the mission, said everything she had worked for – including her scientific research and astronaut training to the historic significance of her background – was drowned out under the avalanche of gendered attacks.

She is best known for her pioneering work fighting for justice for survivors of assault.

Her own goal of reaching space was paused after an attack during her time as a student, leading to a protracted legal battle.

Finding Solid Ground

Months following fulfilling her dream, she reports that the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she expressed gratitude the followers whose kindness were her lifeline. “You were my salvation,” she wrote.

She added that even with the backlash, important benefits had resulted from the flight, such as increased focus on her scientific work and new advocacy opportunities.

The Historic Journey

The computer-piloted spacecraft lifted off from Texas in the spring, carrying the historic roster on a brief suborbital flight that exceeded the internationally recognized boundary of outer space.

The group of women also included experts in various fields.

The enterprise behind the mission is a commercial aerospace company launched by a prominent billionaire entrepreneur.
