The US monetary authority cut borrowing costs on midweek, marking the second rate cut this year during financial volatility originating from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.
Move Comes at Unprecedented Time for Central Bank
The move to reduce the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 3.75% to 4% comes at an extraordinary juncture for the central bank. The authority has been under immense pressure to cut rates even with persistent inflation.
Fed Statement Notes Job Market Shifts
In a statement, the Federal Reserve stated that the unemployment rate had increased but stays modest. “Job gains have slowed,” the release notes. “Price increases has moved up and stays moderately high.”
Federal Closure Complicates Central Bank’s Task
The continuing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in American history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of important economic data has been indefinitely halted as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the closure.
Information Shortage Impacts Policy Decisions
The Federal Reserve usually studies labor statistics to determine employment trends, including the number of new jobs added to the economy and the current jobless percentage. The last jobs report was published in early September, prior to the closure, and provided a somewhat gloomy overview of the jobs market in the previous month.
The number of jobs created to the economy in the summer month was lower by over 100k since the earlier season, and unemployment crept up to four point three percent – the peak since 2021.
Private Data Indicate Ongoing Decline
Though the bureau was scheduled to publish September’s employment data in the start of last month, it suspended its release once the shutdown started. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor indicated recently that the business segment eliminated 32,000 positions in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is still decelerating.
“Supply as well as demand for labor has declined significantly,” Fed chair the Fed chairman stated earlier this month, which he had earlier said stems from trade and immigration measures.
Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Increase
Though BLS’s jobs report has been paused, the agency still issued its inflation report for last month that showed that costs are going up, albeit slowly. Costs rose three percent over the past twelve months, the highest since January. In spring, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
