Lifetime of Income Inadequate for UK Employees to Become Part of Richest 10%, Report Says

Based on fresh analysis, the typical earner in the UK would need 52 years' worth of earnings to achieve the financial standing of the most affluent 10% nationwide.

Widening Wealth Gap Across Decades

This research reviewed net worth information from the 2020-22 timeframe and found that in the mid-2000s, it would have needed 38 years of median full-time earnings to enter the wealthiest decile of the economic ladder.

A research lead associated with the report commented: "Wealth gaps in Britain are presently so substantial that a regular employee accumulating their complete salary during their working years would continue to be incapable to attain the highest level of the financial hierarchy."

Measuring the Wealth Divide

The research revealed that the disparity between the wealth of the median citizen and someone in the top 10% was £1 million in 2006-08, but had increased to £1.3 million in real terms by recent times.

The economist further stated: "These disparities are particularly worrying as economic movement in Britain is limited – those who commence life affluent tend to remain affluent, and vice versa."

Proportional Economic Disparity

Although the financial disparity widening in absolute terms, the portion of complete net worth in the UK possessed by the richest households – known as "proportional economic disparity" – has been "largely unchanged since the 1980s era," as stated in the research.

Over this timeframe, total wealth in the UK increased dramatically from thrice the annual GDP, to almost 7.5 times.

Contributors of Economic Disparity

Referred to as "passive" increases, through increasing property values and changes in pension valuations, were the main drivers of the widening wealth gap over the past decade, per the analysis.

These increases typically went to older, property-owning households, the study demonstrates – exacerbating the age-based economic gap.

Intergenerational Financial Divides

The median economic difference between thirty-somethings and those in their early 60s increased over twofold in actual value, from 135 thousand pounds in the mid-2000s, to £310,000.

Regional Differences

There were also pronounced area-based disparities, with the average level of net worth in the pandemic period reaching 290 thousand pounds in the southeastern region, where real estate values have tended to rise rapidly, versus 110 thousand pounds in the NE of England.

COVID Era Consequences

Throughout the COVID period, when countless laborers were covered under the taxpayer-backed furlough scheme, and Covid shutdowns reduced expenditure possibilities, the statistics indicate countless homes were able to save, growing their net worth.

Higher-income households performed significantly better, nevertheless. "The median home in the lowest-income quintile saw their available funds increase by just £80 during the COVID years (from 2019 to 2022), approximately equivalent to the 24 months before COVID. Conversely, the median home in the top income bracket saw their liquid savings grow by 4,200 pounds," the study reveals.
